This Background Paper is one of a series of papers and resources that accompany the National Best Practice Framework for Early Childhood Intervention (the Framework). This paper describes the sources that the project team drew on when developing the Framework.

The Review Report

This report highlights the evidence from the literature alongside common themes gathered from the consultations, conversations, and co-production activities undertaken to develop the National Best Practice Framework for Early Childhood Intervention.

Desktop review reports

Three reviews of the literature were completed to bring together the best evidence about effective practice in early intervention: a narrative review; a scoping review and comparison of several ECI frameworks; and a systematic review of interventions and approaches. Consultations with families and carers Led by The ACD April 2025

This report contains a summary of outcomes from ACD’s follow up consultations with families. This phase focused on identifying how best to let families and carers know about the upcoming Framework. These engagements were also used to test and refine draft information resources intended for families.

The first two webinars were held through the development of the National Best Practice Framework for ECI. These webinars provides updates to the community on the processes and outcomes of the review of best practice in ECI. The final webinar was held after the launch of the Framework in October 2025 to provide insight into how it was developed.

A progress update on what we have learned November 2024
