Guidance for families

Four core resources for families have been developed and are available in plain English and Easy Read versions. These resources are also available in Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, simplified Chinese and Vietnamese via our resources in other languages page.

This guide is to support professionals referring children and families to early childhood intervention to understand best practice, and to know what to expect from, and how to work with, early childhood intervention practitioners.

This guide is to engage with and support policy makers in their understanding of the Framework so that best practice in early childhood intervention can be used to inform policy development. 

Bringing it to life: a podcast series on the Framework

This podcast series shares conversations between Dr Kerry Bull, PRECI Director (Vic) families and practitioners from across Australia that aim to help everyone understand what high-quality services and support for young children with developmental concerns, delay or disability look like – and how they can implement them in their practices every day.  

Episode 1: Rights-based

Dr Bull has a conversation with two ECI practitioners, one who is also a parent of a child with disability, about how to bring the universal rights-based principle to life.  

Episode 2: Relationship-based

Dr Bull has a conversation with a parent of two children with a disability and an ECI practitioner about how to bring the universal relationship-based principle to life.  

Episode 3: Strength-based

Dr Bull has a conversation with the parents of a child with disability and an ECI practitioner about the importance of the universal strengths-based principle.  

Episode 4: Ecologically-based

Dr Bull has a conversation with the parents of a child with disability and an ECI practitioner about the universal ecologically-based principle and approach.

Episode 5: Child-centred

Dr Bull has a conversation with a parent of a child with disability (who is also a peer worker), and an Early Childhood Educator and ECI practitioner. They discuss the importance of the child-centred key principle and approaches that focus on the individual needs, abilities and agency of every child 

Episode 6: Family-centred

Dr Bull has a conversation with two parents and an ECI practitioner about the importance of the family-centred key principle and associated practices. 

Episode 7: Cultural safety

Dr Bull has a conversation with Belle Arnold, a Waka Waka woman and Special Projects Manager at SNAICC about the cultural safety key principle and the importance of cultural safety.  In her role, Belle manages the delivery of a national program of cultural responsiveness and trauma informed training. 

Episode 8: Diversity-affirming

Dr Bull has a conversation about the diversity-affirming key principle. Guests on this podcast include: a parent who has migrated from Afghanistan and has a child with developmental delay, an ECI practitioner and key worker, and an ECI practitioner working in community health in inner-city Melbourne. 

Episode 9: Teamwork

Dr Bull has a conversation with two parents and two ECI practitioners to reflect on the teamwork key principle and associated best practices of collaborative teamwork. 

Episode 10: Community-focused

Dr Bull has a conversation with two parents, one a peer-leader, one practitioner living remotely and an Early Childhood Educator about the community-focused key principle and approaches in creating welcoming and inclusive community environments. 

Episode 11: Participation

Dr Bull has a conversation with two parents and an ECI key worker and practice coach about the participation key principle and the importance of children’s participation in meaningful daily life situations. 

Episode 12: Everyday settings

Dr Bull has a conversation with two Early Childhood Educators and ECI specialists (one also being a parent of a child with disability) about the everyday settings key principle and the importance of children’s learning and participation in everyday settings. 

Episode 13: Outcomes-focused

Dr Bull has a conversation with a parent of a child with disability and an ECI practitioner and key worker about the outcomes-focused key principle and their approach to supporting outcomes for children and families. 

Episode 14: Evidence-informed

Dr Bull has a conversation with a parent of a child with disability and two ECI practitioners about the evidence-informed key principle and approaches that are central to ensuring quality improvement, accountability and transparency.
