Wellbeing and Mental Health in those with Complex Communication Needs

Young people with disability and complex communication needs (CCN) face barriers addressing their mental health concerns, which may be due to a lack of assessment tools for this population.

Good instruments are needed to properly assess wellbeing, anxiety, and depression and having CCN must not stop people from accessing health services. This PhD project is working towards the development of good instruments using three studies:

  1. A systematic review of the tools that already exist for wellbeing, anxiety, and depression in people with CCN.
  2. A mixed methods study to understand the current practice and future needs of professionals involved in assessing mental health concerns in young people with CCN.
  3. A qualitative study to explore the mental health experiences of young people with CCN.

In time, the research will lead to outcomes that support wellbeing and reduce the consequences of mental health problems for people with CCN.

This doctoral research is funded through the Swedish Research Foundation and the NHMRC Funded Centre of Research Excellence CP Achieve.
